Details: 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster

Chassis: # 8500325

Engine: # 8500329

  • Mercedes-Benz introduced a Roadster version of the 300SL at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show. It effectively replaced the Gullwing coupe which was retired that year. At $11,000, it was more expensive than the outgoing coupe and it benefited from a host of upgrades. Mercedes-Benz described it as their response to the demand in many countries for a particularly fast, comfortable, open sports car. This automobile offers a wide range of technical achievements for even greater driving safety and motoring comfort, as well as a high standard of practical everyday value for touring in real style.
  • Like the Gullwing, the Roadster featured roughly the same engineering underneath, but the body was changed to incorporate regular doors. Detail differences included larger Euro headlights and a more rounded front windscreen. To maintain rigidity, Mercedes-Benz engineers had to add more structural integrity into the chassis. Thus, the Roadster is slightly heavier than its coupe counterpart.
  • The rear suspension was also revised with a low pivot swing axle and an additional coil spring. The engine was slightly upgraded to include The Sports Cam. This helped the car achieve a top speed of near 155 mph. Like the Gullwing, the Roadster was available with a wide array of options including Rudge Wheels, hardtop, and fitted rear luggage.
  • This 1958 300SL Roadster is an original 2 owner, 13,146 mile car which was sold to its original owner, William E. Sloan Jr. of Rochester, NY, in June of 1959. Alex Finigan sold it to its second (current) owner in 2002 and it has been cared for by Paul Russell and Company since then. It is a wonderful original car that still maintains its original and rare Rudge wheels, original paint to sample (as noted on sales invoice), engine, drivetrain, and interior. The car comes with the original Purchase and Sale Agreement showing it was ordered with Rudge Knock off wheels, DB-135 Slate Gray Metallic (Special Order), 641 Leather, and an Ampmeter underneath dash. When the current owner purchased the car from Paul Russell and Company, we conducted a sympatric re-commissioning on the car. The car runs and drives great and is very tight with no squeaks or rattles. This is one of the nicest and most original 300SL Roadsters to come through Paul Russell and Companys shop. It would be a great addition to any collection.
